SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s tough-speaking liberal opposition leader, Lee Jae-myung, was stabbed in the neck by an unidentified knife-wielding man who attempted to kill him during his visit to the southeastern city of Busan, police said.

Lee, 59, the head of the main opposition Democratic Party, was airlifted to a Seoul hospital for surgery after receiving emergency treatment in Busan. Police and emergency officials earlier said he was conscious after the attack and wasn’t in critical condition, but his exact status was unknown.

Lee Jae Myung is a controversial figure in Korean politics. He lost the last presidential election to Yoon, but remained the leader of Korea’s center-left party despite ongoing corruption investigations. He was stabbed in Busan, which tends to vote for the conservative party. I don’t think this is something North Korea would do. But we’ll have to see what the investigation reveals.

I’d also add that stabbings are sadly not new to S. Korean politics. The former president Park Geun Hye was slashed across the face while campaigning.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The attacker approached Lee, saying he wanted to get his autograph, and then stabbed him in the left side of his neck with a knife, senior Busan police officer Sohn Jae-han said in a televised briefing.

Videos circulated on social media showed the suspect, wearing a paper crown reading “I’m Lee Jae-myung,” being chased and tackled by several people, apparently including plainclothes police officers.

Other officers said police are expected to request that the suspect be formally arrested for alleged attempted murder because he told investigators he intended to kill Lee.

Recent public surveys indicated Lee and his main conservative rival Han Dong-hoon, a former justice minister, are the two early favorites to succeed Yoon as president when his single five-year term ends in 2027.

Last year, Lee held a 24-day hunger strike to protest what he called Yoon’s failure to oppose Japan’s release of treated radioactive wastewater from its crippled Fukushima nuclear power, his handling of the country’s post-pandemic economy and his hard-line policies on North Korea.

The court hearing was arranged after the opposition-controlled parliament voted to lift Lee’s immunity to arrest, a move that reflected growing divisions within his Democratic Party over his legal troubles.

Good idea to learn tae kwon do before running for public office in S Korea, I guess.

edit: What, do you all think assassination attempts are going to stop or something? Or is it that tae kwon do is a poor option for helping defend oneself from knife attack?
