I use Simplex and overall happy with it, but since it is so new, would rather not go all-in. It is VC-backed so might eventually enshittify to make a profit.

Interestingly, Simplex usually consumes more than Freetube (my only Electron program) as well!

My biggest hope is on a third-party client, but I guess it won’t be until the project matures more.

Not just huge in size, the biggest bother for me is how huge it is in RAM! It takes more than my browser on average, WTF.

I started using it on desktop first, in no way a mobile was involved. The closest thing I can think of is “Link a mobile” functionality, that can indeed display the profile from the phone on the computer but not vice versa… But this is not the required way of using the client.

Desktop app does not work without the phone? That is just plain untrue. You mean on the same account? Then yeah, it is weird to only have this link one-sided - but it is cumbersome anyway, so much more convenient to use two accounts.

And only on mobile.

Still, a decentralized protocol, not a platform, would have a much easier time circumventing stupid laws like this, as well as censorship.

As someone who has most of her socialization on IRC now… Eww, mIRC is proprietary and for Windows. Maybe it’s just me having learned about IRC only a couple years ago and thus not having a sentimental attachment, but why use it if you have open-source ones like Hexchat, Irssi or Weechat?

I am mostly weirded out by the position of the zero. In Celsuis, zero is in the point that very visibly impacts the world. In Farenheit? Random winter temperature.

I mean the cell modem specifically. But yea, the touchscreens are also a problem.

I don’t see them getting better either - so at least I, maybe because I am not educated enough, think the solution is also in learning to rip out the privacy invasions rather than waiting for regulation or privacy-conscious models.
