For anyone out there, I recommend giving Tidal a shot and for podcasts, I recommend a FOSS app called AntennaPod. This is the combo I use myself, I’ve been using Tidal for a bit over two years now and just recently switched to AntennaPod.

I don’t know how much I’ll need it on a desktop that’s strictly used by me, but I see your point nevertheless. The fact that its turned on by default without user knowledge and that the key is not automatically safely accessible is… That is a whole other level of dogshit, that’s just insane honestly. I’d definitely save it to drive and a stick to be sure, that’s a good one.
I’m gonna upgrade my setup at some point, so thanks for this. I didn’t realize they had some bullshit like bitlocker in there, definitely going to disable that because I cannot lose some files.
It’s not about converting people close to you. In some situations, you’re asking them to install an app just to talk to you, while everyone else they talk to is on WhatsApp. I personally have to use WhatsApp for work and for personal, otherwise I’d literally not get those messages. There’s no option when, if you stop a random person on the street, regardless of what OS their phone is running, and ask to look at their phone, it’s going to have WhatsApp installed. It’s like your phone having email; who the fuck doesn’t have email? It’s the same with Whatsapp, it’s just assumed you have it.
The problem is that only conglomerates can eat the cost of running such a platform. Ads will be the end of free interne, that’s for sure.
While this is an asshole move, companies like Ferrari do stuff like this too. They, for example, do not allow certain modifications on their cars and if they find out that you have done them, they will ask you to restore those parts back to originals. It is unreal how much car companies try to get from us.
It’s the same with messengers, if your friends arent there how useful is that foss messenger really?
This is so difficult. How many people would be willing to switch to Signal or Wickr for one friend? And then what if none of their friends don’t want to switch? And then the friends of those people, etc. Trying to switch workgroups, family, friends and all of their friends as well is a lost cause, it would never happen.
Some of the problems here keep me from fully embracing lemmy, but its a hard question. Some communities that I participate have no intentions of moving from Reddit, some had to move from Reddit and some have found new homes, either here or elsewhere.
Anyone who thought that a decentralized option (Lemmy or anything else) would ever have a serious chance at replacing a centralized option (such as Reddit) was always huffing ungodly amounts of copium. Stuff like this where the admins work for free and have very specific hard-ons for what they think they should allow is one of the many reasons it was never going to work.
And I say this as someone who has seriously tried using kbin/Lemmy for the past 2.5 months. I have found plenty of good stuff here, but I think I would have stopped already if LJ didn’t release sync, which has so far been the only thing that has made Lemmy bearable to use.
YouTube these days is insufferable, its why I don’t bother with it too much anymore. Two pre-roll ads, then two ads after about two minutes, then two more before the end and then two more at the end. And the problem is that you can’t skip through a video without getting ads. So lets say you watch 30 second and then skip, well bam, two new ads even though you only watched 30 seconds. Its so goddamn annoying and they need to lessen the amount.
I’ll have to keep that in mind, thanks for that. I honestly had no considered some BS like that happening.
