The point of the exercise is ALWAYS to spy on innocent citizens. It’s about surveillance and control, not countering terrorism or protecting children.
Yup. This won’t be used just to serve up unblocksble ads. If you’re signed in to Google, this DRM will be used to track you, as well. VPNs will be useless because the tracking won’t be done through your IP address, but through your browser, identified by DRM and tied to your Google account.
That’s what this is really about. Knowing who you are, where you are, where you go, what you see, what you buy, who you associate with. Forcing you to watch ads is just the icing on the cake.
It’s amazing how fast it’s growing. According to Lemmy Explorer, there are nearly 900 Instances, encompassing almost 13,000 communities. The forum software could stand some improvement, like having a way to group all your communities in one place, or figuring out whether an instance is federated. I really like the decentralized aspect of it. If a corporation tries to take over and ruin the largest instance (like what’s happening to Reddit), then folks can migrate over the the second-most popular instance(s) while the biggest one withers and dies.
Also, Mastodon looks like a great replacement for Twitter.
The end of real representative democracy began when the courts allowed the “corporations are people / money is speech” arguments. Once that happened, government began to represent only the interests of billionaires and their lobbyists.
It’s taking decades to play out, but it’s going to end badly.
