It’s a technological and a physical issue. We just can’t store every bit of information plus a picture of everyone’s cat. We can’t guarantee that no information ever gets lost. We’ve also not really stored and archived every shopping list, advertising, pamphlet, silly poem, ugly drawing etc. since the time of the printing press and that’s okay.

It might be a good idea to store and archive some written material as time passes but we want to be a bit picky about what we store. That said, I wouldn’t mind to find more shopping lists and less posh documents in museums.

Yeah, just like most material that was ever printed or carved into a clay tablet. It’s the way of things.

I was leftie before I was techie. If you don’t know anything around tech and computers you wouldn’t know what to do. Even as a fairly tech-adjacent professional it took me quite a while.

Then again, I only became a real leftie again after kicking all the corpos out of my computer.

Tech used to be (and still is) obscured by heavy gatekeeping. We who understand a little more like to joke about those who don’t, and I guess we’ll have to stop that if we really want to unite the left. Don’t ridicule, explain. The person might never have had a chance to learn the concept.

I found KDE Simon, and Numen … I’ve only ever used a commercial product, Dragon Naturally Speaking, many years ago. It was used so I could speak instead of typing texts but it did have functions to assign commands as well - don’t think it worked on Linux though.

Every promise of some greener battery tech, carbon capture solution, ocean cleaning effort, tree planting campaign will only make people complacent and distract from the one thing we need to do now: LESS

I am a translator. Some decades ago the language industry introduced MT - some kind of precursor of LLM. The prices of translation jobs didn’t change, and translators didn’t lose their work entirely. But gradually we were offered more and more MTPE (euphemism for fixing the robot’s shit) jobs, for a lower rate. Many older colleagues stayed with the few remaining translation jobs, young people starting out became “MTPE editors”. These days there are a few translation jobs, many MTPE jobs, and more and more jobs in “AI output rating” - and the new generation will be working as an “AI linguistic assistant” or other such barbarity for even less money.

The tech isn’t necessarily bad in itself, but what we have to wake up to is that tech is used to pay each generation after us a little less. We have to resist this and demand fair pay for fair work always - no matter if they want to call it ‘translation’, ‘AI output review’ or ‘ertdfg sfdgs’ - it has a price, and this price has to respect our dignity and enable a healthy life for us language workers and all other workers.

Meanwhile on every mixed-plastics product and packaging: “I’m super-recyclable and you totally save the planet by buying as many of me as you can uwu !!!”

Wow that sounds amazing. I’m not into heavy world building, but sometimes wish I were, and this sounds excellent and great fun! Is this a fork of the standard MediaWiki software?

I have just started, and decided to use Mkdocs for my personal notes, journaling, and a budding novel that kept buzzing around in my head and wants out. In the moment I just throw titles, links, citations and bits of text in a document, later I hope to be able to sort through the mess and separate into chapters. Let’s see. I’ve connected it to a git repository on codeberg for backup. I did this because I like to write in Markup and decided to use the same setup to create a static page for my business (with My Webapp on Yunohost to serve). Then I just kept the same for my notes. I like super simple folder based setups without too many bells and whistles cause I find them distracting. Focuswriter on the other hand was too basic without the ability to create links between files.

Great to know, I’m on yunohost and considered creating my own instance. I guess I’ll get to that when I take the step from rented VPS to home-run server.
